Dr. Lucas Gregory
Associate Director, and Chief Science Officer, Texas Water Resources Institute, Texas A&M
Lucas Gregory, Ph.D., currently serves as associate director and chief science officer for the Texas Water Resources Institute. He joined TWRI in 2006 and focuses his work on understanding the drivers of changing surface water quality and restoring impaired waters. He provides leadership for the institute’s watershed assessment, planning, and management team and is the institute’s Watershed Management thematic lab leader. He is also working to increase water quality and human health research, leads the institute’s team engaged in water monitoring data collection, management, and assessment efforts, and is the agency lead for Texas A&M AgriLife on the Ogallala Aquifer Program.
Lucas engages in water resources research and leads development of inter- disciplinary teams to address priority water issues. His primary research interests are (1) bacteria fate and transport in aquatic and soil environments; (2) watershed assessment, planning, management, and sustainability; (3) instream water quality monitoring; (4) best management practice efficacy evaluation and testing; (5) improving understanding of human health implications of emerging water quality issues; (6) improving water quality through stakeholder engagement; and (7) PFAS distribution, fate and transport in the environment.
Since 2021, Lucas has served as a Universities Council on Water Resources board member, and is now serving as president for the 2025-2026 cycle. Additionally, he is the chair of the 2026 UCOWR/NIWR Annual Water Resources conference, to be held June 8-10, 2026 in San Antonio, Texas . We look forward to the coming year of working with Lucas! He brings a wealth of leadership experience, excellent communication skills, and a proven dedication to UCOWR and the collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving so valued in our community.
