University Of Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minnesota,
St. Paul, Minnesota and
Duluth, Minnesota

The University of Minnesota offers a graduate minor in water resources and an interdisciplinary graduate program in Water Resources Science (M.S. and Ph.D. degrees). This system-wide program includes core courses in hydrology, limnology, water chemistry, water quality management, and water resources policy/law. Areas of specialization include aquatic biology, hydrologic science, aquatic chemistry, and water engineering and technology. The program is designed to produce graduates with broad training in water-related sciences and a multi-disciplinary perspective on water research and management.

Departments in many disciplines on the Twin Cites and Duluth campuses have Ph.D. and M.S. programs related to water resources. The Water Resources Science and Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering Programs include:

  • Hydrology
  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Limnology
  • Water Resources Engineering
  • Water Policy
  • Oceanography

Graduate studies in hydrogeology and a new Geo-fluids training program are offered in the Department of Earth Sciences. Forest Resources offers training in forest hydrology and water quality with an emphasis on watershed management and international issues. A variety of water-related research opportunities and course work is available in Land and Atmospheric Science. A multi-department program in limnology (including paleolimnology and aquatic ecology) is available through Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, Geology, and several other departments; and a focus in climatology is available through the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate. Courses bearing on water resources also are offered in:

  • Applied Economics,
  • Fisheries, Wildlife andConservation Biology
  • Geography, Environment and Society
  • Environmental Health and Safety
  • Entomology
  • Landscape Architecture
  • The Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs
